Technical Textile Manufacture

Infrared Application of the Month:
Technical Textile Manufacture

A manufacturer of high value synthetic fabrics for critical-use items (parachutes, tents, hot air balloons) required process heat for the drying component of their manufacturing line. Their exacting requirements included fast drying time and very tight space constraints. The company chose a custom-built infrared system from Heraeus Noblelight. The small-footprint system used fast response mediumwave infrared lamps to dry the fabrics evenly and quickly without negatively affecting the fabric dyes.

Coating Nonwoven Medical Fabrics

Infrared Application of the Month:
Coating Nonwoven Medical Fabrics

A major textile manufacturer required increased throughput to meet the market demands for its coated, nonwoven fabrics. To address this challenge, the facility chose an infrared heating system from Heraeus Noblelight. The IR system was the best solution because of its targeted properties: it provided sufficient heat for fabric drying without affecting the product's polypropylene layer, which has a low softening and melt point. Other benefits of the system included tighter system control and energy efficiency.

Tech Center Spotlight: Wavelength Converter

Tech Center Spotlight: Wavelength Converter

Heraeus has developed an ingeniously simple solution to the problem of radiaiton loss during heating materials of different heat absorption rates: a patented wavelength converter, consisting of a plate with mineral fibers, absorbs the radiation which has passed through the material and radiates it back into the material at a different wavelength. The wavelength converter absorbs transmitted infrared radiation, heats up to 500 - 600°C and then radiates back medium- and long wave radiation. Energy savings and faster heating are among the wavelength converter's many advantages.

Special Designs: InfraDry Modular Infrared System

Special Designs:
InfraDry Modular Infrared System

Dryers for web heating using a clamshell configuration, with one or two side heating are the mark of the Infradry line of web processing equipment. The heating and drying systems typically come complete with closed loop temperature control systems. Depending on the process, Carbon, Medium-wave, or short wave can all be utilized in the Infradry systems for the best match of wavelength and absorption. Line speeds of 1000+ fpm are possible due to the correct matching of peak wavelength/ absorption and system efficiency.
